Certification

Distance Education Certification

Recertification Requirements: multiple pathways!
Not a standardized, one-size-fits-all recertification process.

Aim: recognize and build upon what faculty are already doing.

  • Flexibility: faculty choose to complete 1 pathway within 3 years. Once you complete recertification, the clock (3 years) begins again.
  • POCR (rigorous, best for frequent online instructors)
  • FRC-led course (Recertification)
  • Workshops (FRC, @One, etc.)
  • Course Survey (work one-on-one to design an online course; focus on course quality & RSI)

Certification is tracked via Canvas Parchment
After going to the link above and logging in, click on My Badges at the top center (see video here)

You can view all of your FRC/SBCC badges at the same site.  All badges expire 3 years from the issue date.

When you complete recertification, the new badge expires 3 years from the date issues (it does not extend 3 years from the current expiration date).

If you complete an SBCC self paced course that meets the 10 hour requirement, a recertification badge will be issued automatically upon completion.   This new badge will expire 3 years from the date issued.

If you complete multiple webinars or short trainings, you will need to keep track of the proof of attendance.  Once you meet the minimum of 10 hours of Distance Education focused training, you can submit your certification using this form.

If you complete a training course or certification outside of SBCC that meets the minimum 10 hours of Distance Education focused training, you can submit that proof using the same form.

What qualifies as Distance Education focused training?
Training focused on Canvas, Online Pedagogy, Instructor presence, Online Design, RSI (regular and substantive interaction), Video based instruction (zoom, canvas studio, Wevideo, etc).  These can be online or in-person training at SBCC, @One, or another institution.

What qualifies as proof?
A certificate or completion screen stating what was covered in the training, and the number of hours spent.  This can look like a certificate, email, or screenshot.
